It seems that country after country is beginning to restrict access to internet dating. We have seen this in China, Australia, Pakistan, and now Afganistan.
Last week the country demanded that ISP’s begin filtering websites which have content related to internet dating and social networking. After their recent release from the Talibans clutches, Afganistan countrymen are now under another threat, the threat to their freedom of access to information. As if they didn’t have enough problems!
At the moment, it appears that the censorship only extends to Facebook, Gmail, YouTube, and Twitter, with many more blocks expected to be put into place. Users are told that if they wish to complain, they should contact the Ministry of Commmunications, which is not known for its quick action.
Internet usage is on a sharp increase in Afganistan, showing an increase of users of over 25% in the last twelve months. Over half of the population of Afganistan are expected to have internet access within the next year.
The reason given for these blockages is that certain internet sites are against the traditions of the Afgan people, and are not suitable for viewing by younger people.
